We’ll be meeting with Jackie Marion, a graduate of Penn Fine Arts who works in their in-house graphic design office. She will show us how their office works and what they produce.

Green Giveaways

Here’s how we are going to proceed:

Build on the design on page 9 of the presentation and integrating with the icons in the design on pages 2-4

- create unification between the recitations and the course

- consider including the Greenworks Philadelphia logo

- reduce the tensions between the recitations and the lecture

- design a logo that is visually complex yet flexible

- propose applications of the revised design to the following:

Web page that serves as course site and portal with links to recitation blogs

Lectures / Powerpoints title pages format

Introductory video frame/animation prototype

Printed handout format

Regarding the first design: we all like the unification between the

recitations and the topic altogether. However, we would like to cover

up blank, white space (especially in the middle). One suggestion was

to use faded backdrops of our institutional partners’ logos, or their

locations in the city if well-known, behind their respective

recitations (not to drown out the white, but simply to fill most of it

up). Someone also suggested that the “sustainability in action” center

circle be filled with the logo of greenworks.

The second, third, and fifth designs were very interesting and

eye-catching, but the group rejected them mainly because they lack

unifying factor. Nothing connected the recitation symbols to the

lecture’s symbol, and, in the case of the fourth and fifth designs,

nothing represented the recitations but different colors.

The fourth design, one of the favorites, led to a lengthy discussion

on how we should include both greenworks and some other symbols for

the recitations. One student suggested that we take the recitation

symbols from the first design and incorporate them into the spiraling

colors of the fourth; the recitations can then be identified by both

color and symbol. Additionally, they came to a unanimous decision that

the green circle in the middle can be replaced with the greenworks

symbol. We came to a consensus that greenworks should appear/be

acknowledged somewhere: while we know that the class itself does not

exist solely as a support for greenworks, much of our work will stem

from the idea (indeed, we began our very thoughts and creation of

these projects with the goals of greenworks in mind, but we want our

students to learn about sustainability, with greenworks working as its

support rather than its main motivator).

Finally, the group had no large objections to the last three designs,

but there were no lengthy discussions on them as well. We feel that

they are unified quite well, but do not see how we can include

greenworkswithin them.

What we mainly want to focus on is removing, or at least reducing, the

tensions between the recitations and the lecture. The logo should

paradoxically be complicated (enough to get attention and connect the

classes’ very different aspects) yet flexible; if the very worst

happens and we have to drop recitation projects, we would rather not

have to create a completely different logo. The students should also

bear in mind how we plan to use this logo.
